Black, White, & Red

This will probably be my last outfit post before the “big day”.  I wore this outfit a couple of weeks ago on one of those days where we had a break from the frigid weather (you can still see some snow melting on the ground).

I was so excited to bust out this new light weight coat I bought at Zara on super sale back in January-it was only $49.99!  It didn’t quite button but I think I managed to get away with it.  You can pair red with so many different colors from soft grey to bright turquoise, but when in doubt you’ll never go wrong pairing it with white and black.

What color do you like to wear with red?

HAPPY SATURDAY!  Hope you have some great plans for the weekend but if you have some downtime here are some of my favorite links from around the web.

  • This last month of my pregnancy has seriously sent my sweet tooth into overdrive.  I may just have to try this CHOCOLATE LAYER CAKE recipe this weekend.  It looks DIVINE!
  • I never set out to have a “signature scent” but really the only thing I ever wear is LIGHT BLUE by DOLCE & GABBANA.  It seems to be the only scent that sticks to me and it’s lemony notes remind me of summers spent eating lemon ice pops by the beach in the South of Italy.  I'm always on the lookout for something new and plan to give these CITRUS SCENTS a try next time I am in Sephora.
  • If you’ve been reading my blog you know that I subscribe to BIRCH BOX and love it.  It’s like my birthday comes once a month when I get that box full of little surprises in the mail.  You can imagine my delight when I came across this FOOD SUBSCRIPTION BOX called TRY THE WORLD !  What could be better than receiving delicious goodies from around the world straight to your home? This is the perfect gift especially for a new mom (wink, wink to my husband if he’s reading this).
  • Maybe it’s the weather warming up but I’ve definitely had the shopping bug lately.  I’m trying to hold off as much as I can but the great sales on new arrivals are killing me. JCREW is currently running 25% off full price styles and an extra 30% off spring sale styles with code SHOPNOW.  They have a great PANT FIT GUIDE that details all the styles they carry.
  • The weekend is always a great time for relaxing, reflecting and reading something inspirational.  THIS ARTICLE is a must read!

SHOPBOP has been running their Friends and Family Sale all week and today is the LAST DAY! Use code SPRING25 at checkout and get 25% off almost everything (some exclusions apply.)  I’ve rounded up some of my favorites items that will be perfect for spring and summer.

Since I’ll be post baby belly this summer I’ve been on the look out for nice one-pieces like THIS ELLA MOSS SUIT that has just the right amount of coverage and sass!  I definitely need to purchase a pair of THESE IPANEMA JELLIES that can go straight from the beach to dinner with this PRETTY MAXI DRESS which would look great worn open as a cover-up. Or if you prefer a more traditional cover-up option this JOIE TUNIC is perfect.  I would throw it over white jeans for a more dressed up look with these NEUTRAL SANDALS that will seriously “go with anything”.  You can never go wrong buying summer basics like this FEMININE TOP or these TORTOISE SHELL SUNNIES and the start of a new season is always a great time to clean out your makeup bag and replace it with a cute one like THIS.  I’m sure by now you’ve heard of Clair Vivier but if you haven’t let me introduce you to her super soft, simple and stylish bags like THIS TOTE with just the right amount of “french girl” flair.

Now is also a great time to add items to your wardrobe that are trending for spring and summer like these HIGH-WAISTED JEANS or this HIGH-WAISTED SKIRT, this MINI BUCKET BAG, these FRINGE SANDALS and this adorable DENIM SKIRT .  Although they are current trends, they are also classic pieces that will make great additions to your wardrobe for seasons to come.  And at 25% off, you really can’t go wrong - but hurry this sale ends tonight!

My Favorite Finds (Pregnancy Edition)

Now that I’m nearing the end of my pregnancy (17 days till my due date) I think it’s a good time to recap my favorite items, the ones I couldn’t have lived without for these past 9 months.  Although there are things that you will definitely use more in one trimester and less in others,  I’ve made pretty good use of all these items.

I can’t recommend exercise enough throughout your entire pregnancy (with your physicians approval of course.)  I continued to take spin classes and workout with a trainer all the way up to my 7th month.  I stopped around 7 months for various reasons and definitely felt less energy and flexibility along with poorer sleep, although my SNOOGLE has been a godsend.  It’s big no doubt, but it helps prevent back pain and makes sleeping more comfortable.  I think I’ll have a hard time parting with this after pregnancy.  As for exercise,  even though I’m less than 3 weeks away, I’m trying to incorporate walking and squats back into my daily routine as I’ve read this helps with labor.  Workout clothes that fit well have been hard to find but I like the CHAMPION maternity line at Target because it fits well and is super comfortable and affordable.

Even if you do work out, your body will change and your belly will inevitably stretch.  I’ve used MUSTELLA DOUBLE ACTION STRETCH MARK CREAM  throughout my pregnancy.  I’m prone to stretch marks so I’m hoping that this will help keep them at bay.  I haven’t seen any yet but keeping my fingers crossed.

As your body changes and grows you’ll need to purchase new clothes.  I find that whatever styles work for you pre-pregnancy are what you should stick to during your pregnancy.  I like to wear jeans and tight fitting tops so I continued to wear these items during the past months.  You’ll most likely veer towards one type of panel pant.  THE GAP has a wide selection of all three types of jeans and pants.  For me I loved side insert early on which I wore with my BELLABAND later in pregnancy and the full panel as my belly got bigger.  I would recommend buying the BELLABAND in nude so that it can be worn underneath both light and dark tops.  OLD NAVY MATERNITY TANKS have been one of my favorite items, they are cheap and comfy and can be worn underneath sweaters and button downs or as a PJ top.  I think I will continue to use these as I nurse.

Although pregnancy is a beautiful experience, many women will suffer uncomfortable side effects like morning sickness, nausea and indigestion.  I had really bad morning sickness the first three months and the only thing that helped was sleep and anything ginger. One of my favorite ginger remedies was this GINGER TEA.  As the nausea disappeared and I was able to eat more, the indigestion crept up and now is a daily occurrence.  I have a couple of bottles of TUMS SMOOTHIES around the house and pop a few when it really gets unbearable.   They help soothe and also provide a extra dose of calcium but as always make sure to ask your doc first.

What are your favorite pregnancy items?

Stripes on Stripes

My favorite part of a new season is being able to check out and shop all the new arrivals.  This season I won’t be doing any shopping since I am well in to my third trimester.

I’ve scratched that itch by decorating the nursery and shopping for my little one which has been loads of fun.  For me, I’ll keep my sights set on summer, when I’ll hopefully be able to purchase some new additions to my wardrobe.  I am curious to see how my body will change and or bounce back from pregnancy and keeping my fingers crossed that it won’t be too tough.

In the meantime, I’ve tried to make the best out of what maternity items I have and tried to use any of my pre-pregnancy pieces that could work.  Both the turtleneck and dress in this shot are non-maternity but have just the right amount of give to fit me comfortably.  This has to be one of my favorite and possibly the most comfy outfit I’ve worn my entire pregnancy.

It’s purely coincidence that the bag and dress match perfectly but I love the concept of pairing vertical with horizontal stripes, don’t you?

Banana Nut Chocolate Chip Muffin

I guess I’ve been lucky with my pregnancy because I haven’t really had any specific cravings or food aversions.  On the other hand my sweet tooth has grown rather insatiable, especially in the last couple of weeks.  I’ve tried my best to satisfy it with smoothies, fruit and dark chocolate but sometimes I’ve just had to give in!

So last week I searched the internet for a recipe that would both satisfy my sweet tooth and use up the over ripe bananas I had in the fridge.  I didn’t want the typical banana bread, I wanted something richer, sweeter and more dessert like.  Well, this Banana Nut Chocolate Muffin With Cinnamon Streusel I found on Sally’s Baking Addiction did the job and then some.

I pretty much followed the recipe exactly, except I substituted buttermilk for yogurt since I didn’t have any yogurt on hand.

The muffins turned out rich, moist and delicious but perhaps just a bit too sweet and chocolatey even for my sweet tooth.  I plan to try this recipe again with the following changes: 1. reduce sugar for muffins to 1/3 cup 2. reduce chocolate chips for streusel to 1/2 cup and use mini chocolate chips instead.  I also think this would be great as a cake as well.  I’ll be sure to share my results when I try it again.

In the meantime this is a great treat for a cold and snowy day!

Although there is snow still on the ground we had quite the warm up yesterday with temperatures reaching the 40’s.  This mini “heat wave” inspired me to add some color to my day.  Wearing one of my favorite bags and these shoes I recently bought on super sale at Banana Republic made my day even brighter!

Hope you are having a good week.

Hawaii Part I

This deep freeze that has a hold on most of the country has me craving warmer weather and the arrival of spring.  Heck - as much as I love it,  I’d be happy to skip spring and go right to summer at this point.  Needless to say these are the reasons I’ve been reminiscing about my Hawaii trip last month and dreaming of the sun.

Since I’ve been pregnant through this fall and winter, I don't have any summer pregnancy clothes nor do I want to buy any, so I tried my best to make do with what I had.   One thing I did buy for my trip is this non-maternity beach cover up from TJ Maxx which is super flowy and will work this summer when I am no longer pregnant as well.  I loved the bright color which just so happened to match my beach bag perfectly.

While I was away, most mornings consisted of yoga on the beach or a long power walk followed by breakfast in this comfy cover up.  My favorite breakfast spot was the WHALE’S TAIL JUICE HUT, a cute little stand with scrumptious baked goods, fresh pressed juices and a killer view.

The rest of the day was spent lounging at the pool or catching up on some work followed by dinner with my husband.  One of our favorite dinners was at KA’ANA KITCHEN in the ANDAZ HOTEL.  This open concept restaurant focuses on "shared plates" which highlight the local in season harvest.  They serve a killer breakfast too!  We made a quick stop in the lobby which was so cool and modern I could only imagine how nice the rooms are.  I fell in love with the sleek color palette (which I happened to match) and clean lines so much so that I took lots of pictures I'll keep for inspiration for when we buy a new house.

Stay tuned for more on my Hawaii trip as well as a full list of my favorites spots to hit in Maui.  In the meantime think warm thoughts.

Black & Snowy White

One of my favorite color combinations is black and white.  It’s always clean, always polished and always in style.  I love the way the white speckles on this coat mirror the fresh fallen snow.  That hit of snowy white paired with the gold zipper and accents and lush faux fur trimmed hood take this otherwise classic toggle coat up a notch.  It looks perfect over this slightly dressier outfit but could just as easily be thrown over jeans and turtleneck.

Don’t you just love those multitasking items in your closet?

My Favorite Finds

Hope you are having a relaxing weekend and keeping warm!  Here is a recap of my favorite links, products, articles and more from around the web and beyond.

  • If you want the scoop on current events and breaking news but are short on time, then join Oprah and about a half million other people and sign up for the The Skimm.  It’s a daily newsletter sent to your inbox with a fresh and reliable overview of the day’s top news stories.
  • I’m always on the lookout for an effective and affordable dry skin lotion, especially in these frigid temps.  Check out Glitter Guide’s recommendation for the best lotion for dry winter skin.  I’ll be adding this to my shopping cart next time I’m at Target.
  • I guess you can say that I’m in the “nesting” stage of my pregnancy because I’ve been consumed with decorating projects lately.  I love this slideshow full creative ideas on how to hide those unsightly eyesores around the house.

Kiwi, Banana & Spinach Smoothie

Sometimes it’s hard to get all your servings of fresh fruit in during the cold winter months.  I find myself getting bored of the winter selection and veer towards the frozen aisle.  Enter the often forgotten super fruit called Kiwi.  This fuzzy little fruit is not only low in calories but chock full of vitamins, minerals and flavor.  It’s particulary high in Vitamin C and fiber which make it a great choice for adding to smoothies.

I love having smoothies as a late morning or mid-afternoon snack and have been throwing this one together when I need a little energy.  It’s full of fiber from the apple, chia seeds, spinach and kiwi, while the yogurt provides some protein which should be eaten at every meal/snack.  The banana, apple and kiwi really do provide enough sweetness but I added some honey since I was making this for my husband who has a pretty big sweet tooth.

I'm curious to experiment with kiwi and see what other recipes I can add it to.  Do you have any favorite kiwi recipes? I’d love to hear!

Serves 2

1 banana
2 kiwi, peeled
1 tbsp honey
2 tbsp chia seeds
heaping 1/2 cup yogurt (I used 2% Greek)
1 apple, cored
large handful spinach
1/4 cup water
ice to taste (I like my smoothie very cold)

Mix all ingredients together and blend till smooth.  Add more or less water to reach desired consistency.

Staying Warm and Comfy

No matter where you live, I’m sure you’ve heard by now that the North East is experiencing some of the coldest temps it’s seen in 20 years.  As a result winter’s must have item is a down coat, puffer, parka, anorak or whatever you choose to call it.  Regardless of the name, the key is warmth and comfort.

At 31 weeks pregnant, I sized out of my current puffer and opted to buy a regular coat and size up as opposed to buying a maternity style.  I loved this RALPH LAUREN  one as soon as I saw it last week at LORD & TAYLOR- it was just my size and on super sale.  It’s still listed as full price online but in store I got it for more than 50% off.  My hope is that next year I can cinch the draw string waist and still be able to wear it.

In keeping with the comfort theme, I can’t get enough of these Gap Maternity SUPER SOFT TEE’S.  They are just the right length and thickness and... surprise, super soft.  I’m sure the NON-MATERNITY version is just as comfy.

Besides the tee, I am wearing two more of my current wardrobe favorites.  These SAM EDELMAN “PETTY” BOOTIES have been my go to since the beginning of fall.   They are comfortable and look super cute with  practically anything from dresses to jeans and ankle length pants.  I have them in Black Suede and this Deep Saddle and plan to purchase them in Putty for Spring.  You’ve seen me wear a large tote more than once.  I find them to be the perfect bag for Winter since they are roomy enough to hold your gloves, scarves and hats when you are inside.  I bought this one which is sold out at J.CREW a couple of months ago, but they have this DEEP RED one still on sale.

For as many puffers as you see out on the streets you'll hear a complaint about the snow and cold.  I myself am guilty as charged.  It’s nice though to remember to get out there every so often and enjoy the snow covered scenery and have a little fun which is precisely what Roman and I did this past weekend.  And it’s definitely best enjoyed when you are comfy and warm.

Valentine’s Day Inspired Deals

I’m usually not one to wear red on Valentine’s Day, but there are more subtle ways to get into the spirit of the holiday.  The color blush is having a moment now and pinks in general will continue to be a strong trend for Spring 15.  This ultra feminine color looks great paired with neutrals by day but by night I like to turn it up with some edgy black pieces.

Everyone of these items can be worn now and well into Spring.  The best part is that they are all currently on sale!  If I had to chose, my favorites and probably the best deals are THIS SWING SKIRT  from J.CREW on sale plus an additional 40% off and THESE EARRINGS and THIS CUFF from BANANA REPUBLIC also on sale plus an additional 40% off.  And how about THIS TOP from PIPERLIME?  It doesn’t get much more romantic than pink florals.

Happy Valentine’s Day
