VOCABULARY BOUTIQUE, SAN DIEGO - PART THREE

They say "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”... ain’t that the truth?  When I walked in to VOCABULARY, stylish owner Cecelia Church was wearing this little black and white number by RIELEY and I knew I had to have it too!

Black and white is a color combination that’s always in style but this shirt dress’s modern silhouette takes it from classic to contemporary.

You don’t need much to go with it since its funky pattern and fun detailing steal the show.  I did however fall in “love" with this cuff and threw it on to complete my look.

As I mentioned, VOCABULARY carries many local brands.  These sunglasses are by SOLO EYEWEAR, a company that funds eye care for people in need, with each purchase.  You can do good and look good at the same time!

Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta with Mixed Berry Compote

THIS is the dessert you’ll make when you care enough to make the very best, but have about five minutes to do so.  I just recently hosted Father’s Day dinner at my house and really wanted to make it special for my own father, my husband, and my brother-in-law.  They say if you finish a meal with a great dessert, your guests will leave happy regardless of what came before.  So with little time on my hands, I decided to make dessert my main focus.

Panna Cotta is the easiest, most versatile dessert you’ll probably ever make.  It originated in Northern Italy and literally translated means "cooked cream.”  It only needs a couple of ingredients and can be whipped up in about 10 minutes or so and then left in the fridge to set.  The best part is that it can be customized to please the pickiest of eaters, it can even be dairy or gluten free, or vegan.  You can experiment with almond milk, coconut milk, and various flavorings.

I found THIS RECIPE originally by JUDY WITTS via DAVID LEBOVITZ, a trusted source for sweet and scrumptious desserts.  I opted to use a vanilla bean because I love the flavor and the flecks of bean you can see in the cream, but you can easily use vanilla extract if that’s all you have on hand. I topped it with a super quick compote made with blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and some sugar and lemon juice to taste.  I smashed the berries with the back of a fork, combined all the ingredients and heated them on low.  Once it all comes together and thickens slightly, it’s done.  It should take about about 5-10 minutes.  You can add some water while heating to adjust the consistency if needed.  I had the perfect size glass bowls to use, but it would look lovely in a wine glass or mason jar as well.  I definitely will be experimenting with panna cotta this summer so stay tuned for more sweet concoctions.  And don’t forget to let me know what you try, I’d love to hear about it.

VOCABULARY BOUTIQUE, SAN DIEGO - PART TWO

The second look we chose at VOCABULARY BOUTIQUE was a flowy printed skirt by Riley, and basic black tank by Eneday.  This outfit will be my go to all summer.  The skirt is modern, flirty and fresh.  A sure customer fave, since they also carry it in a dress.  I love the graphic print and pops of color!  The black tank is super soft and fits like a glove.  It will truly go with just about anything.  It’s one of those items you'll wish you bought two of.

One of my favorite things about shopping at VOCABULARY is all the fun and chic jewelry and accessories.  You can stock up on pieces for every look in your closet, and not break the bank!  This turquoise bracelet and purse (by local San Diego company De Palma), matched my look perfectly.  VOCABULARY also carries the prettiest stationary and unique housewares (check out the glasses below.)  I love buying gifts here because I know they will always be loved!

VOCABULARY BOUTIQUE, SAN DIEGO - PART ONE

A couple of weeks ago while I was in San Diego, I had the pleasure of collaborating with one of my favorite local shops, VOCABULARY.  Ever since my sister introduced me to it 3 years ago, it’s been a must on my to do list EVERY time I visit.  What I love most about Vocabulary is that it carries a mix of fun, well known brands as well as new, exciting local designers and brands.

On this day, I got to work with fabulous owner Cecelia Church, and together we picked out four very different but stylish looks.  It’s no wonder that VOCABULARY is such an amazingly curated store, since after working with Cecelia for just a short time, it’s clear that she has a keen eye for style and her pulse firmly on what’s trending.

The first item she showed me was this crisp white linen shirt by Lumiere.  It was love at first sight and I threw it on right over the JEANS I WAS WEARING.   I think lots of people shy away from linen because it wrinkles easily, but to me, that’s part of the appeal.  It gives you that lived in and well travelled look.  It’s like, if only this shirt could talk, it would tell you the most interesting stories about African safaris and whale watching expeditions in New Zealand.  We pulled it all together with this statement cuff, earrings, rings and MY FAVORITE TOTE.  A quick pause for some photos and back to pulling more looks together.  Stay tuned!

Berry Chocolate Protein Smoothie

Some of my favorite breakfast foods are hot and hearty like toasted egg sandwiches or oatmeal and oat bran.  When it’s warm and especially muggy like it was yesterday though, I tend to crave something cool and refreshing.  So I’ve been on somewhat of a smoothie kick lately, experimenting and trying different combinations.  And although many smoothies can be loaded with sugar and fat, if you use whole fruit instead of juice and add some protein, they can actually be quite satisfying and healthy.  This one, made with sweet berries, almond milk, and chocolate protein is really delicious.  I used half skim milk and half almond milk because Rom├ín doesn’t love almond milk, but feel free to use a whole cup of almond milk which will give it a nuttier taste and (added bonus) makes it dairy free.

Tip* If you’re a chocolate lover like me, use chocolate almond milk instead.  It will taste like you are biting right into a chocolate covered berry!

Ingredients: Serves 1
1/2 cup sliced strawberries
1/2 cup blueberries
1/2 cup almond milk
1/2 cup skim milk
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
4-5 ice cubes

Procedure:

1.  Combine all ingredients in a blender and enjoy.

Wedding Weekend

Dress: Jessica Simpson @ Nordstrom / Shoes: Old from DSW (Similar Here) / Earrings: Argento Vivo @ Nordstrom  / Bracelets: Kate Spade  and Old Bauble Bar (Similar Here)  / Ring: Old Lia Sophia / Bag: Old Gucci

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of two of my dear friends.  I am a sucker for weddings and this one happily delivered on all that weddings promise to be.  Great food, great company, music, and lots of dancing all in one amazing venue.  When I received my invite I knew I had to pick a dress that was just as fun, elegant, and stylish and as the special couple themselves.  I found it by chance on the sales rack at Nordstrom...I love it when that happens!!  The a-line shape reminds me of a 1960’s dress, so I tried to create a slightly 60’s feel with my hair and accessories.

The best advice I can give when going to a wedding is to wear shoes that are stylish, and if not comfortable, at the very least bearable.  Don’t despair, they can be found!  Generally,  shoes with a platform tend to be the better choice for comfort.  My pair kept me comfy from the adorable pre-ceremony drinks all the way to the dreamy and decadent dessert table.
