This past weekend was full of celebrations!  We had my mother’s 80th birthday party on Friday night and my stepson’s first communion on Sunday.  It was a hectic week preparing for both events with lots of family coming in to celebrate.  Although these times can be chaotic with so many people running around the house and so much to do, they are full of joy and love and a time to make memories that will last a lifetime.

As you might expect, one of my favorite things to do for a party is pick what I am going to wear.  I bought this dress a couple of weeks ago from a little boutique in Peapack, NJ called the The Red Toad.  I discovered it one day when I was early for work and had some time to kill.   It was a huge steal at 70% off and perfect to wear for the first communion.  SCORE!!  I love the pastel flowers and strategically placed lines that accentuate your figure.  My plan was to wear it with a mint green or lavender blazer but I was short on time and settled for a black one that I had instead.  I think it looked just as pretty especially with the rose gold jewelry which accentuated the soft pastel colors.  I have two more first communion parties coming up within the next two weeks.  Although I would love to wear this again most of the same people will be there.  It’s a perfect excuse for a shopping trip.

Pizza Break - Georgetown

On our last day in D.C., we headed over to Georgetown for a walk and a quick bite before we hit the road.  We found Il Canale thanks to the kindness of a stranger who overheard us trying to pick a lunch spot and recommended we try this "great Italian pizzeria around the corner".  It’s the cutest spot right off of a channel that runs parallel to Main St.  They are certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, which means they serve authentic Neapolitan pizza, made with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala, and “00” flour, all imported from Italy.  The crust was the perfect blend of crispy and chewy and served with a cold beer, hit the spot perfectly.  After lunch we wanted to grab dessert from Georgetown Cupcake, but the line was wrapped around the block.  We settled for chocolate covered almonds from Dean and Deluca instead.

Weekend Favorites - Links I’m Loving

I just spent the last three days in Washington D.C. enjoying the beautiful cherry blossoms and spending time with my in laws and parents.  We hit all important sites which left no time for off the beaten path exploring.  There's something about D.C. that I just love.  I can’t quite put my finger on it but it has a certain energy that I like.  My husband and I are planning to go back soon and explore some of the hot new food scene and fun shopping.

Here are my favorite links from this week.

1. A SOUTHERN ITALIAN EASTER TRADITION .  If you’ve never had one, you must try.

2.  I’m making THIS ARTICHOKE SIDE DISH to go with my leg of lamb today.

3. THIS INTERVIEW makes me love Pharrell Williams even more.

4.  I love this site for great AT HOME WORKOUTS.  They have every type of workout from 10 minutes to 88 minutes.  I’ll be using this to work off all the Easter chocolate I’ve eaten.

5.  Think that 10 minute workout is not worth it, THINK AGAIN

Inspired by Nature - Coral and Turquoise

Nature can be a strong inspiration when choosing color combinations.  If you’ve ever scuba dived or snorkeled and had the opportunity to admire natural coral reefs in clear sunlit turquoise waters, you know that these complimentary colors are truly eye catching.  Although it tends to be more of a summertime combo, if you choose the right shades it can be worn year round.

Weekend Favorites - Links I’m Loving

I’ve been busy prepping the house for my in-laws who are visiting from Argentina and will be staying with us for a couple of weeks.  We are turning our office into an office/guest room and I’ve managed to get a little behind on my Friday Favorites.  So, it may be a day (or two) late but never a dollar short.  Here are some of my favorite links this week.

1. I know it seems early, but get a jump on your bathing suit and cover up shopping with MELISSA ODABASH, before all you can find is mismatched patterns and sizes.  They may seem pricey but these ARE the suits that Vogue has referred to as the “Ferraris of swimwear".

2. QUIT THE GYM and get outside, your body and your wallet will thank you for it.

3. I’ve picked my LAMB RECIPE FOR EASTER , but no need to save it only for a holiday.  Lamb is a perfect Spring dish, great for a dinner party.

4. I’m coveting a GRAY MALIN from his La Dolce Vita collection.  They bring back warm memories of summers spent in Italy when I was a child.

5. Pastels are not just for Easter Eggs anymore.  These PRETTY AND FEMININE COLORS are a big trend for Spring and Summer.

Put Some Spring in Your Scarves

Scarves have pretty much become a year round staple in my wardrobe.  While during the Winter we wear chunky knits that keep us warm, Spring and Summer is less about function and more about polish, dimension, and color.  I just bought this one from Banana Republic (it’s sold out online already) which I’m planning to wear with white jeans and a white tank.  I couldn’t wait for the warmer weather, so I threw it on this past weekend over a jacket.  I love the way it looks with hot pink lip stick.

Here are 9 of my new faves for Spring.

Fun Spring Scarves

Easy Weekday Oat Bran

Weekday mornings can be so hectic in my house.  Breakfast usually consists of a protein bar or piece of toast on the run.  No problem, until 9:30 when I’m ravenous again.  My friend’s nutritionist recently recommend that she start eating oat bran for breakfast.  She’s been singing it’s praises ever since.  I finally tried it and I’m glad I did.  It’s easy, tasty, nutritious and keeps me full for hours.  Best part, it doesn’t take much longer than toasting a piece of bread.

Ingredients for 1 Serving:
1/4 cup oat bran
1 cup cold water
1/8tsp salt (optional)
1 banana, sliced
chopped nuts
1 tbsp honey (or more if you have a sweet tooth like my husband)
a sprinkle of cinnamon

1. Place water, salt, and Oat Bran in a saucepan.

2. Bring to a boil over high heat.

3. Reduce heat and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Pour in to a bowl and top with sliced banana, chopped nuts, honey, and cinnamon.

Note:  You could make this in the microwave by placing the first three ingredients in a bowl.  Microwave for 1-2 minutes, stir and microwave again for 1-2 minutes.   I prefer the stovetop version because like oatmeal, the oat bran always bubbles over and dirties my whole microwave.

Stripes & Studs

The weather is getting warmer but it’s not time to pack your tights away just yet.  I typically plan my outfits around one item that I am in the mood to wear.  Today, it was these cool gold studded tights that I picked up on a recent trip to Italy.  I topped the cool but comfy look off with this mixed sweater jean jacket that is definitely a trend for Spring.  I’ve already been wearing it over everything from dresses to work out clothes.
